In the countryside of Angus, a short way north of Dundee, Glamis Castle is one of the most
famous castles in Scotland. It has long been the home of the Earls of Strathmore and
Kinghorne.
Royal and literary connections
Glamis was the childhood home of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth the Queen
Mother, and her daughter Princess Margaret was born here in 1930. Shakespeare made Macbeth
Thane of Glamis, and the castle has gathered legends and ghost stories over the centuries.
Visiting
The castle's rooms are shown on guided tours, and the grounds and gardens can be explored
on foot. It makes a relaxed half-day or day out in Angus.
Planning your visit
Glamis is a private house that opens to visitors at certain times of year, so check the
castle's own website for dates and tickets before you go. It is in the countryside and is
most easily reached by road.
