Explore Inverness

Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, is a long way from Carnoustie: several hours by train. It is best enjoyed as part of a longer stay rather than as a day trip.

Getting there from The Station Hotel

From The Station Hotel, Carnoustie

  • Train Around 4 hr 40 on average ScotRail's average journey time between Inverness and Carnoustie. Best as part of a longer stay.

Journey times are approximate. Check current travel information before setting off. For train times, see ScotRail or National Rail.

We will be honest: Inverness is too far for a relaxed day out from Carnoustie. The train journey takes several hours each way, so it makes most sense as a stop on a longer tour of Scotland, perhaps before or after a few nights with us.

Once there, the River Ness runs through the middle of the city, and a walk upstream along its banks reaches the Ness Islands, a string of wooded islands joined by footbridges. Inverness Cathedral stands on the riverside, and the city is a natural base for Loch Ness and for Culloden Battlefield, where the last pitched battle on British soil was fought in 1746.

Opening times, admission charges and what is on all change, so check each attraction's own website before you set off.
