Arbroath
By train: Around 10 minutes Direct trains run between Carnoustie and Arbroath.
A harbour town with a medieval abbey, sandstone cliffs and the Arbroath smokie.

Staying beside the station makes a car-free break genuinely easy. The line through Carnoustie follows the coast, north towards Arbroath, Montrose and Aberdeen, and south to Dundee, where you can travel on towards Perth and the rest of Scotland.
Arbroath is the closest day out, a short ride up the coast. Dundee, with its waterfront museums, is the obvious city trip. Aberdeen, Glasgow and Inverness are longer journeys, and some trains need a change, so they suit a full day or part of a longer stay rather than an afternoon.
The journey times below are approximate and taken from ScotRail's own averages. Timetables change and not every train is direct, so always check ScotRail or National Rail for the train you plan to catch, and remember that Sunday and holiday services can differ.
